For children around the age of eight a good starter pet is a hamster. Some parents may not believe so since hamsters are nocturnal. Put the hamster in the child’s room so they can watch over it.

Image via Wikipedia

The hamster sound be placed in the child’s room and the child should be placed in the child’s room and they should be responsible for keeping the hamster’s area clean, the animal feed, watered, and the bedding clean and fresh.

Hamsters are also a good pet because they are active and should keep the child’s attention, while other pets may not. The hamster lives in a habitat that can be expanded giving the child a project and learning about the responsibility of caring for a pet.

Caring for a pet takes time and a degree of commitment. If a child has a hamster for a pet, over time parents can determine how committed to the care and feeding of the pet a child is and will not tire of the novelty of having a pet.

Since hamsters live for a relatively short time compared to other animals, and hamsters are easier to be adopted than many other types of animals. Adult dogs and cats as an example are harder to adopt since most people want a puppy or kitten.

Having a pet means that you are making a commitment to take care of that pet for its lifetime. Pets are not something disposable that you have for a short time get tired of it and then take it to the pound not caring what happens to the animal.

Think about this, most shelters are over populated and do not have the space for the pets they have now. If they need more space for unwanted pets the ones that haven’t been adopted may be put to sleep.

Please, if you get a dog or cat be sure to neuter the pet and remember that a dog or cat may live for 15 to 20 years. I have one cat that is 17-years old.

With school in session, it is time to write reports, stories, and more. This is a good opportunity to gain experience in writing and to develop your writing style.

After moving from Kansas to West Virginia and taking about five weeks to get Internet access at home again, I am finally able to work on my blogs and work on my writing online again. It’s hard trying to work online from the local library. I have to drive to the library and am only able to work during certain hours while trying to unpack and organize my work area.

Everyone should work at improving their communication skills. Written communication is something that should be part of improving communication. Writing well for clear understanding is a much-needed skill.

There is a good deal to learn about written communication. I am writing a series of articles entitled Writing is Easy on my blog RJMedak at WordPress.Com. Please visit and look at Part 1 through Part 3. Part 4 will cover Tone and in the process of being written.

If only writing well were as easy as many people think. As Nathaniel Hawthorne said, “Easy reading is (darn) hard writing.” This statement is true. It does take hard work to get the words and your thoughts across for the reader to get your meaning without having to figure it out.

You should always practice your writing every chance you get from notes to letters and everything in between.

School is once chance to practice your writing skills and work at improving with every piece of writing you do from reports to letters to friends and family.

As you practice the written form of communication, you are well on your way to being a good communication after you graduate from school and join the work force or run your own business.

You should also practice your writing skills as you connect with friends by sending them e-mails and on places like Facebook or other sites you and your friend frequent.

Ask your parents to take you to the library so you can check out books on the subject of writing.

Summer break is on the horizon. Do you have vacation plans?

No matter what kind of vacation plans you and your family have, are you planning to do any reading? You should think about taking a book with you if you and your family go on a trip somewhere. Your parents could even buy you a book when you reach your vacation destination.

Why read? You can’t visit places twenty-four hours a day. You could take some time to read before going to sleep.

Reading books helps prepare you for school. Reading helps you with spelling, reading, and comprehension for your classes in school. Your parents should help you with this.

When I was younger, I would read any book I could get my hands on. Today I write reviews about books I read, and have fun doing it. I get to read all kinds of newly published books free, and afterwards with the authors’ permission donate them to my local library. How much fun is that? My local library doesn’t have to pay for books that people can borrow.

There are different types of books such as business, fiction, science fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, autobiographies, and memoirs. I have even written reviews of books for children.

You might not believe it now, but reading helps to build personal character, vocabulary, and knowledge of many subjects.

Are you interested in something specific? Why not find a book about what you are interested in and learn more about it. Many different subjects have books written about it. Reading can help with everything from animals to zoology.

I hope that your parents encourage you to read.

When you were a small child, or are too small to read for yourself, do your parents read to you?

Reading is a great pastime that should be pursued anytime you have free time. Reading books whether physical or electronic can take you on journeys into the unknown; learn about places, people, things, and even things that could be in our future.

Reading will also help you build a vocabulary; learn spelling, and even writing better.

Books are our past and our future. Reading can also be our teachers of many new and wonderful ideas.

Reading helps build character and a sense of one’s self and their relation to the world at large.

Reading helps with learning and asking questions. Learning should be a lifelong pursuit. It is fun learning new things.

Learning new things is why there is homework to do from school. Learning makes you a more rounded person than just playing video games or spending time on chat sites.

Reading books helps with being creative in other parts of your life and helping in the way you approach problems.

Sit down and read a book.

Is your dog or cat left-handed?

Just like humans, cats and dogs can be either left or right-handed. Did you know that?

Not many people do.

This could be a chance for you to learn more about your pet. Take a toy and see which paw they use to play with it. Do they use one paw more than the other?

As you interact with your pet, you will be building a greater bond and learning more about the animal family member in the process.

Pets are also like humans in other ways besides preferring one hand over the other. Pets need stimulation to be healthy emotionally. They also need exercise for healthy muscles. Good food and water is only a small portion of what everyone needs, including your furry family members.

We all need exercise, proper rest, good food, and water to keep our bodies healthy for a longer life; your pets need the same.

Part of being a responsible pet owner is to insure they get everything they need from food to exercise and emotional stimulation.

At least once a day, weather permitting, your pet should get fresh air, exercise, and dogs should go for walks. Just as humans do, animals should not just sit on the couch and do nothing.

For optimum health and long life, humans and animals need many of the same things. While we are different in some ways, in many ways humans and animals are alike.

Love your pet as you do the rest of your family.

There is reading, tutorials, puzzles, coloring, math, science, and more available for children.

I don’t recommend many sites, but this is one that may be worth looking into for your young children.

There are even ways for your child to learn while playing games and completing puzzles.

Do you know what “holistic” means?

One dictionary states Holistic means:

“Emphasizing the organic or functional relation between parts and the whole”

This means a natural approach as opposed to the use of compounds found in medicines that a veterinarian my use to treat a pet.

A holistic doctor or vet takes special training so they can use this holistic approach to treating either humans or animals.

Many people wonder if all of the medicines created by pharmaceutical companies are good for pets or people, what if any are the side effects, and more.

Aspirin originally came from plants. It is a compound found in the willow, which alleviates pain.

For centuries, the eastern medicine has been treating ailments with compounds other than the chemicals western medicine uses.

There is no way to tell if one way is better than another is.

It’s known that some antibiotics are not as effective as they were due to overuse; could this happen with other medicines as well?

There is no way to tell if other drugs may become ineffective over time.

This is why a holistic approach, to pet health care might be an alternative, for those who are concerned.

Each of you needs to make your own decision about whether or not to find a holistic doctor or vet for the family members, both human and animal.

Did you know that pets are subject to allergies just like humans?

Pets can have dietary allergies, skin allergies, atopy, and flea allergies. Some allergies are hard to diagnose at home and will require the services of a veterinarian.

At a pet owner, you must watch out for any changes in your pet. It could be itching, patchy skin, hot spots, or inability to hold down food, or anything out of the normal as far as your pet is concerned.

Once you begin feeding your pet a certain brand of food, try to maintain the same food. Changing foods is not good for pets. Some people like to prepare the meals for pets. Before choosing this option, read up on the nutritional requirements of the specific pet. Cats and dogs require different nutrients. Choose a food that meets these requirements for a healthy pet.

Pets may also be allergic to shampoos and other coat products. Read the labels on all products before purchasing them and using them on your pet. If you can’t pronounce something in it, question if you should be buying it.

Fleas are around all year and your pets need protection against them. Pets can develop anemia due to fleas, which may require a blood transfusion. Blood transfusions can be hard on pets. There are no blood matching like there is for humans.

To lessen the likelihood of allergies, keep an eye on your pets, keep their environment clean, and check your pet for signs of fleas and eradicating them.
