Hot Car Deaths

This year many children and dogs have died because of excessive heat in vehicles.

To avoid hot car deaths remind your parents to leave dogs at home when it is warm, and not to leave small children in the car either.

The inside of cars can get hot enough for dogs and small children to die if left alone for any length on time in the sun.

If you must take a pet in the car on warm days, never leave them in the car alone.

While shopping or running a quick errand when it is warm, do not leave children in the car, as many have only to find their child dead, or in serious condition.

Children and pets cannot handle the heat in cars. There have been adults running tests by sitting in a car to measure the temperature. Cars can get over twenty degrees inside the car than the temperature outside the car.

Dogs need cool water, shade, and a place to rest when it is warm. If it is too warm for you to play outside, it is too warm for your dog.

Leave your dog at home when it is warm with plenty of water and shade. If children must go with parents, the parents must be sure not to leave the child in the car.

Try asking a neighbor or friend to watch the child, put something like your cell phone by the child to remind you to take the child with you, not leave them in the car where it could get hot.

Use parking structures, shade, or somewhere out of the direct sun; so the inside of the car will be cooler when you return to it.

The darker the color of the car the more heat it will collect.

Always watch out for your children and pets because they depend on you to keep them safe.

How to socialize a puppy

All animals that come into your house need socialization for their emotional well-being, and for being part of the family, especially if there are other animals in the house.

One reason for socializing any animal you are considering adding to your family is to build trust between the animal and the family, also establishing an authority chain order.

Another part of socializing is training your puppy in the basic obedience commands.

  1. Sit
  2. Stay
  3. Come
  4. Heel
  5. Down
  6. Leave it
  7. No
  8. Off

Dogs need exercise, and leash training. Walks using leashes in your yard is one of the best ways to leash train a dog because they are comfortable in their own space.

If you have other dogs in the home, walking them on a leash with the new dog or puppy is a good way for the new dog to learn from the trained dog in the home how to behave on a leash, they should never pull hard on the leash.

Train your dog(s) never to leave a vehicle until you have their leash in your hand and ask them to come. This will stop them from jumping out and running around instead of being under your control.

If you already have a dog obedience trained, the new dog will pick up the habits of the dog already obedience trained dog in the home. If there is not a dog in the home, practice patience, never yell or strike the dog, instead, use positive reinforcement with praise for a command performed correctly.

Socializing a dog also includes playing with the dog, and not forgetting to play with the dog in the home, and watching how multiple dogs play together. See how multiple dogs react during feeding time, as some dogs may be food aggressive. If a dog is food aggressive, try separating them and see if that fixes the problem.

Dogs need sufficient cool water and shade on hot days, and their area cleaned regularly.

Future Plans

Reading is like taking a magic carpet ride to other lands and times.”

Many children change what they want to be, as they grow older. Some choose a fireman, police officer when they are young, this may change with age.

The point of all of this is the fact that there requirements and training for most jobs.

Some jobs require education past high school, and some may require advanced degrees. There is also a learning curve once you lad a job.

You be might reading textbooks, training manuals, job handbooks, and maybe even a management handbook that are related to your position in a company.

As a reader for over 60-years, there are more books than can be read in one lifetime on almost as many subjects.

If you are open to learning new things, pick a subject and look for books on the subjects that appeal to you, also check out ones that you may not like but would like to learn about that has nothing to do with your interests.

As you grow up, reader is the best teacher, if you want to be a writer.

If you choose to be a writer, please have a second source of income, because making a living as a writer is very difficult at best. There are more than 200,000 books written per year.

As soon as you start working, even a part-time job, think to the future when you are older and approaching retirement. You must have a nest egg to rely on for you to live on. Rely on yourself, not other people or the government.

Hold on to your dreams, but live in reality.

When was the last time you read a book?

Why should you read a book?

  • You can learn about other cultures
  • You can learn numerous subjects
  • You can visit other lands while sitting at home
  • You can expand your knowledge
  • It is entertaining
  • It will make you well-rounded in your knowledge
  • Reading is relaxing
  • Reading stimulates the mind
  • Reading helps you write better

What books to read?

Choosing a book for reading is up to the person, some people like fantasy, others mystery, or books about animals of the world, books about plants. The choices are limitless.

There are books for young children to adults.

You can have something to talk about with your friends if they read; they might even read the same books you do. It is a good thing to have something in common with your friends, and can talk about it face-to-face.

If there is something that interests you, like cats or dogs, the ocean, insects, birds, or something else, a trip to the local library will be a journey into knowledge by finding books on the subject and reading them to learn more about what you enjoy.

Reading a book isn’t just for school, but an extension of things from school.

Reading before bed is a way to relax and sleep better because you will be tired and it will be easier to fall asleep.

What you were reading may also help you with reading and understanding your schoolwork better.

Practice in everything makes you better at it.

Plan a trip to the library when the weather is good and pick out some books to read. You will enjoy it.

Be Careful on the Internet

Be careful on the internet when you post personal information about yourself when posting online.

Remember that everything you post is online forever. If you post pictures, make comments, talk about your school by name, town, and more, you never know who is reading it or how they will use that information.

Sad to say, but there are adults looking for children in chat rooms, who may do bad things to children, and are looking for children’s information they can use to come to children’s homes, school, or even parks and playgrounds and abduct them and hurt them.

Information you put online can be used by someone to bully you like many children have been.

The internet is a great place, but it can also be a place to get into trouble if you post too much personal information about you and your family. If there are things you don’t want getting out in public, don’t post them or tell anyone online what they are.

Girls like to send pictures to their boyfriend, this is a big mistake. You don’t know what he will do with it, or who he’ll share it with.

This is also true for things you share with people using a cell phone. Many people regret things they’ve post that come back to haunt them later.

Modeling pictures have cost people titles in contests, and may even hurt people in trying to get a job because many businesses use the internet to search the potential employee to see what they say and do online. Employees have lost jobs over things they’ve said about a company they work for.

As much as people like to think things are private, the truth is that nothing you put online is truly private and might be used to cause emotional harm, bullying, and get you for getting a job you want later in life.

Please, be careful what you say and post online.

Christmas Time

Christmas is approaching, and many children are requesting a pet for Christmas.

If you receive a pet for Christmas, remember that a pet is not like a toy you get tired of and ignore; a pet is a part of your family for life and is a living creature that needs to be taken care of.

If you want a pet for Christmas, you should also be willing to take on the responsibility of taking care of your pet, and any other animals in your home. Never ignore your pets just because you get tired of them because the novelty wears off.

Dogs and cats can live for 15 to 20 years old, unfortunately the larger the dog the shorter the life span, some breeds as low as 10 years.

When you have a pet, you are responsible for the pet’s food, water, health, training, and emotional stimulus. Pets need someone to clean their living space, have toys to play with, someone to watch out for foods that can harm them, like plants, cleaning products, and other home hazards, and kept safe from other animals. Fish that a cat can reach is not a safe environment for your fish.

Once while getting licenses for my pets, a father, and his young son came to the pound saying they didn’t want their dog anymore. The dog was a young golden retriever, if no one adopted that dog, it could end up put to sleep.

Before you ask for a pet for Christmas, think about the fact you need to care for that pet for its lifetime.

Do You Read Books?

Bradbury receiving the National Medal of Arts ...

Author Ray Bradburysaid, “You’ve got to love libraries. You’ve got to love books. You’ve got to love poetry. You’ve got to love everything about literature. Then, you can pick the one thing you love most and write about it.”

It’s not just about wanting to write, but about learning new things. Whatever subject you want to learn about, there are books that will help you learn.

It’s my personal philosophy to try and learn something new every day. I could live in a library or bookstore and be very happy. I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. I have read books by Isaac Asimov to Emil Zola. I have read books of poetry, novels, short stories, mysteries, myth, religion, philosophy, physiology, zoology, phytology, botany, mammals, reptiles, etymology, and more. This is because I like all types of reading and learning things.

By reading books, you can learn about other countries, cultures, space, and many other subjects that may be of interest to you. The most powerful item in my wallet is my library card, which allows me to borrow books and read about different times, places, and times.

I have helped in literacy programs, and feel that anyone who is able to read and write should help others learning English, or those who haven’t learned to read and write, so that a new and brighter world opens before their eyes.

It’s by reading and helping people to expand their abilities that we who help, gain as much as the ones we help.

I feel that everyone should be able to read and write in their native language, which in America is American English although America has no official language.

Congress tried many times to have English declared the official language congress has never passed a bill to make it so.

Do yourself a favor, go to the library and check out a book and read it from cover to cover, you might enjoy the journey it takes you on. Remember this quote from Ray Bradbury, “I still love books. Nothing a computer can do can compare to a book. You can’t really put a book on the Internet. Three companies have offered to put books by me on the Net, and I said, ‘If you can make something that has a nice jacket, nice paper with that nice smell, then we’ll talk.’ All the computer can give you is a manuscript. People don’t want to read manuscripts. They want to read books. Books smell good. They look good. You can press it to your bosom. You can carry it in your pocket.”

How to Control Diabetes

Whether you’ve been diagnosed with either Type I or Type II diabetes, it is an individual and a family affair.

As a child everyone wants to be just like all of the other kids at school, and you may think that because, you have diabetes that you are not normal any more. This is not true; with the rise of obesity, more children will receive a diagnosis of diabetes.

What to do about diabetes

As a child, you may be required to take pills or shots. With the improvements in delivery systems for insulin, you may not need a bottle and syringes as in years past. You will however, need to listen to your doctor and your parents about monitoring your blood sugar to help maintain a healthy A1c (A blood test that tells how well diabetes is controlled. Usually a 3-month test.), which your doctor should do. From this test, your doctor can adjust your medication to the right level for you.

Your family can be sure that you get a proper diet and exercise to help control both weight and the amount of exercise to help you control your diabetes. The better the control of your diabetes equals the possibility of fewer problems in the future.

Some of the effects of less than good control of diabetes are things like neuropathy (loss of feeling due to nerve damage), cataract (a problem with the lens of the eye), retinopathy (a problem with the inner eye), kidney problems, and more. This isn’t meant to scare you, but to tell you what might happen, not what will happen. It all depends on how well the diabetes is controlled, and that is up to each individual and no one else.

Your parents can help, but it is finally up to the person diagnosed with diabetes to care for themselves. No one can make you take care of your blood sugar control, they can only help you learn how and to make sure that you test your sugar level.

On days when you are sick, your blood sugar can go up and steps need to be taken to monitor it more closely, because if it goes too high or goes too low, there can be problems and a doctor may need to be called.

This is why you need to test your blood sugar on a regular basis. It will help establish a normal range for you so that if it goes outside your normal range, you can take steps to regulate your blood sugar. You should also learn the signs of low and high blood sugar. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.
